Given Chrome's large user base, Google has been wary of modifying the design and structure. However, with the addition of a configurable toolbar shortcut, such modifications may be in the works with its Chrome web browser.
On Android, Google has taken a typical approach to the toolbar, which includes the home button, address bar, tab switcher, and overflow menu, which houses a variety of operations.
Google now looks to be pushing out a 'toolbar shortcut' between the Omnibox and the tab button/counter, according to 9to5Google. Here you can perform one of three actions: Voice search, Share, or New tab (+ sign) (microphone).
Users are presented with a 'Based on your usage' button by default, with Google giving a 'Current recommendation.' 'New tab' and 'Share' are already on the overflow menu, and pressing the address bar brings up the 'Voice search' option.
Toolbar shortcuts have been around since Chrome 92 for Android was released in July 2021. Some persons were exposed to it as part of a standard A/B test. Even while Google hasn't formally revealed the features, their availability has been substantially higher in recent weeks, even after version 101 became stable on Tuesday.
This is a little update in the grand scheme of things, but it adds a significant amount of UI to the Chrome layout for Android. This button should be deemed significant enough by Google for people to adopt.
