Samsung announced the fastest RAM for mobile and AI purposes

On the server side, the higher speed and capacity of LPDDR5X RAM will bolster the capabilities of AI applications running on server systems.

Samsung has once again raised the bar in memory technology with its latest unveiling of LPDDR5X RAM, boasting an impressive speed of 10.7Gbps. This surpasses the previous record held by the 9.6Gbps LPDDR5T variant introduced by SK Hynix last year.

The 25% increase in performance over the previous X variants is not the only enhancement, as Samsung has also managed to shrink the size of these chips by utilizing a 12nm class process. This reduction in size has allowed for a 30% increase in capacity, with Samsung now offering 32GB packages with the new LPDDR5X RAM.

The increased speed and capacity of LPDDR5X RAM will enable smoother and more responsive performance for a wide range of tasks.

From running complex mobile games and multimedia applications to handling multitasking and productivity apps, the enhanced memory capabilities will provide users with a seamless experience. Additionally, the new power-saving technologies incorporated into the LPDDR5X chips will contribute to improved battery life, extending the usage time of mobile devices without compromising on performance.

Primarily targeted towards AI applications, these advancements in memory technology are especially beneficial for handling large models that demand substantial memory resources. Even high-end GPUs like the Nvidia RTX 4090 have limitations due to their VRAM capacity, making memory-intensive tasks a challenge.

Samsung’s LPDDR5X chips address this issue while also incorporating new power-saving technologies. These advancements enable the chips to reduce power usage by 25% and enter low-power mode for extended periods, making them ideal for battery-powered mobile devices and server applications.

Samsung has plans to commence mass production of the 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X RAM in the second half of this year, subject to testing with mobile chipsets. Additionally, the company is already working on developing next-generation LPDDR6 RAM, signaling a continued commitment to pushing the boundaries of memory technology.
