Nothing Phone (4a), (4a) Pro, (3a) and (3a) Pro Receive Stable Android 17 Update

Both the Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro are receiving build C5.0-261023-2146.

Nothing is bringing its latest software experience to more smartphone users, and four popular models are now joining the Android 17 upgrade. The company has started rolling out the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update to the Nothing Phone (4a), Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro, introducing a redesigned interface, new customisation options, camera improvements and additional features.

The rollout follows the stable release for the Nothing Phone (3) earlier in October. With four more devices now receiving the update, Nothing is gradually expanding its latest software experience across its smartphone lineup.

Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17 and brings a combination of Google’s platform improvements and Nothing’s own software features. However, the update is being distributed in stages, meaning some users may receive it before others.

Nothing OS 5.0 Stable Update Reaches Four More Smartphones

The latest update covers four devices:

  • Nothing Phone (4a)
  • Nothing Phone (4a) Pro
  • Nothing Phone (3a)
  • Nothing Phone (3a) Pro

According to the reported firmware details, the Nothing Phone (4a) is receiving build C5.0-261023-2145, while the Phone (4a) Pro gets C5.0-261021-1625.

Both the Nothing Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro are receiving build C5.0-261023-2146.

The update brings Android 17 alongside Nothing OS 5.0’s redesigned interface and several exclusive features.

As expected with a major software release, the rollout is staggered. This means the update might not appear on every eligible device immediately, even if another user with the same smartphone has already installed it.

Users should also avoid downloading unofficial firmware packages from unknown sources. Waiting for the official over-the-air update is the safer option.

Redesigned Notifications and Quick Settings

One of the most noticeable changes in Nothing OS 5.0 is the ability to separate the notification panel from Quick Settings.

Previously, users accessed notifications and system shortcuts through the same pull-down interface. With the new update, these sections can have separate spaces, giving users more control over how they access alerts and frequently used settings.

Quick Settings contains shortcuts for features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other system controls, while the notification area focuses on incoming alerts.

The redesigned layout makes the interface feel cleaner and gives users a more organised way to manage everyday smartphone interactions.

Nothing has also improved Bluetooth controls. Users can now connect or disconnect supported Bluetooth devices with a single tap directly from Quick Settings.

This small change could make switching between wireless headphones, speakers and other accessories more convenient.

New Translucent Theme and Lock Screen Customisation

Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a new Translucent theme for the launcher.

The theme uses a frosted-glass-inspired appearance, with subtle accent colours influenced by the user’s wallpaper. This gives the home screen a different visual style while maintaining Nothing’s minimalist design approach.

The lock screen also receives additional customisation options.

Users can choose between two new clock faces and customise the clock’s colour to better match their wallpaper and overall theme.

These changes give users more flexibility without requiring third-party launchers or additional customisation applications.

Nothing has also introduced the new Geist typeface, which contributes to the refreshed appearance of the operating system.

Combined with updated animations and a redesigned Settings interface, the changes make Nothing OS 5.0 feel like a more complete visual refresh rather than a simple Android version upgrade.

Dedicated Glyph App Makes Rear Lighting Easier to Manage

Nothing’s signature Glyph Interface is receiving its own dedicated application.

The Glyph Interface has always been one of the most recognisable features of Nothing smartphones, using rear lighting elements to communicate notifications, alerts and other information.

With Nothing OS 5.0, Glyph-related controls are brought together in a dedicated Glyph app.

This should make it easier for users to discover and manage the available lighting features without navigating through multiple system menus.

The update also introduces a Glyph Timer widget, allowing users to start a countdown directly from the home screen.

For people who regularly use the Glyph Interface, having a dedicated application and a new widget should make these features more accessible.

New Widgets and Improved Digital Wellbeing Features

Nothing OS 5.0 adds new widgets designed to make the home screen more useful.

One of the additions is the Collector widget, which allows users to turn favourite photographs into decorative home screen elements.

Another addition is the Away Time widget, designed to track how much time users spend away from their smartphones.

The idea is to encourage more awareness of screen time and help users understand their smartphone habits.

The Glyph Timer widget adds another practical shortcut, allowing users to access countdown functionality without opening a separate application.

These additions give users more ways to personalise their home screens while introducing features that focus on everyday convenience.

Expanded Dark Theme and Improved Privacy Indicators

The latest update also improves the dark-mode experience.

Nothing OS 5.0 introduces an Expanded Dark theme designed to apply dark mode to more applications, including apps that do not natively support it.

This could help users maintain a more consistent appearance across their smartphones, especially when switching between applications with different interface designs.

Another addition is a three-colour status bar indicator that helps users understand when sensitive system activities are taking place.

The indicators provide information about sensitive access, location usage and AI processing.

Privacy indicators are becoming increasingly important as smartphones rely on more background services and artificial intelligence features.

By making these activities more visible, Nothing aims to give users a clearer understanding of what their devices are doing.

The update also includes adjustable Enhanced HDR brightness, Noto 3D Emoji support in Gboard and refinements to Live Updates.

Camera Improvements Differ Between Phone (4a) and Phone (3a) Series

Camera improvements are another important part of Nothing OS 5.0, although some features differ depending on the smartphone.

All four devices receive a refreshed Camera interface, alongside improvements to recording, zoom, close-up photography and QR code scanning.

One of the most interesting additions is Dual-view Video, which allows users to record using the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

This feature can be useful for vloggers, content creators and people who want to capture their reactions alongside what is happening in front of the camera.

The Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro receive additional video editing and camera customisation features.

These include a new Tuning feature with seven adjustable effects, upgraded Presets and support for Filters and Tuning while recording videos.

The Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro also receive Dual-view Video, along with faster Essential Voice transcription performance.

Although the camera improvements vary between models, the overall update aims to provide a more polished photography and video-recording experience across the four smartphones.

Faster Essential Voice Transcriptions

Nothing is also improving its Essential Voice experience on supported devices.

The Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro are receiving faster Essential Voice transcriptions, helping reduce the time required to convert spoken content into text.

This could be useful for people who frequently record notes, capture ideas or use voice-based tools during their daily activities.

The update also brings broader improvements to system responsiveness, including smoother animations and refinements to everyday interactions.

Nothing has been focusing on improving performance across application launches, scrolling, touch response and multitasking.

Improved memory management is also intended to reduce unnecessary application reloads, helping the system maintain a smoother experience when switching between apps.

How to Install Android 17 on Nothing Phone (4a) and (3a) Series

If you own one of the four eligible smartphones, you can manually check whether Nothing OS 5.0 is available.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings on your Nothing smartphone.
  2. Navigate to System.
  3. Select System update.
  4. Tap the option to check for available updates.
  5. If Nothing OS 5.0 appears, review the update details and begin downloading it.

Before installing the update, Nothing recommends backing up important information, including photographs, contacts, messages and call logs.

Your smartphone may also become warmer and consume more battery power during installation. This behaviour is temporary, and performance and power consumption should return to normal after the update process is completed.

Since the rollout is happening in stages, users who cannot find the update should check again later.

Which Nothing Smartphones Will Receive Android 17 Next?

Nothing has also shared an indicative rollout schedule for other eligible smartphones.

The next devices expected to receive Nothing OS 5.0 include:

  • Nothing Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus: Mid-November 2026
  • Nothing Phone (3a) Lite: Late December 2026
  • Nothing Phone (4b): Mid-January 2027
  • CMF Phone 2 Pro: Mid-January 2027

These dates are estimates and may change depending on development, testing and regional rollout requirements.

The Nothing Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus are expected to receive the stable update next, while the Phone (3a) Lite and other upcoming eligible devices will follow later.

However, not every older Nothing smartphone will receive Android 17.

The Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of their major Android operating system support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0.

What the Android 17 Update Means for Nothing Users

The arrival of Nothing OS 5.0 on the Phone (4a), Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro is an important step in expanding the company’s latest software experience.

The update introduces meaningful changes to the interface, including separate notification and Quick Settings panels, a dedicated Glyph app, new widgets and additional personalisation options.

Camera improvements are also a major part of the release, particularly Dual-view Video and the extra editing features available on the Phone (3a) series.

For users who prefer a clean Android experience with distinctive customisation features, Nothing OS 5.0 offers several reasons to look forward to the upgrade.

The only downside is the staggered rollout, which means some owners may have to wait before the update reaches their devices.

Overall, Nothing is making Android 17 available to a wider range of its smartphones, bringing a refreshed experience and several useful additions to both its Phone (4a) and Phone (3a) families.
