« Back to Glossary Index

BlackBerry OS, developed by Research In Motion (RIM), is a proprietary mobile operating system designed specifically for BlackBerry smartphones.

Known for its native support of corporate communication environments, the BlackBerry platform enables seamless wireless activation and synchronization of email, calendar, tasks, notes, and contacts.

The currently deployed versions of BlackBerry OS include the BlackBerry Device Software v5.0, BlackBerry 6 OS, and BlackBerry 7 OS, each offering improved functionality and features.

In 2013, RIM plans to introduce BlackBerry 10 OS, a QNX-based operating system that is similar to the one utilized in their Playbook tablet.

BlackBerry 10 OS will serve as the successor to the existing BlackBerry OS, operating on both smartphones and tablets. Although specific details about BlackBerry 10 OS are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated to bring significant advancements to the BlackBerry platform.
