vivo X500 Ultra Leak Hints at a Massive Telephoto Camera Upgrade
The rumored upgrade becomes more significant when viewed against vivo's recent camera history.

The next vivo Ultra flagship could make distant subjects look clearer without forcing users to rely on increasingly aggressive digital zoom.
A new leak suggests the upcoming vivo X500 Ultra is being tested with a significantly larger telephoto camera sensor, potentially delivering one of the most meaningful camera upgrades in the company’s recent Ultra lineup.
The reported change is particularly interesting because vivo has maintained a similar telephoto sensor size across several generations.
If the latest hardware makes it into the final phone, the X500 Ultra could finally break that pattern and improve the way it captures portraits, distant objects, and photographs in challenging lighting.
However, the device is still under development, and its camera specifications have not been officially confirmed. The latest information should therefore be treated as a leak rather than a final specification sheet.
A Bigger 200MP Telephoto Sensor Could Change the Game
According to the latest report, vivo is testing the X500 Ultra with a 200MP periscope telephoto camera built around a 1/1.12-inch sensor. That would be larger than the 1/1.4-inch sensors used by the vivo X100 Ultra, X200 Ultra, and X300 Ultra.
The resolution may remain unchanged, but the increase in sensor size could make a noticeable difference. A larger sensor generally provides more area to collect light, potentially improving image quality when shooting at longer focal lengths, especially in dim environments.
That matters because telephoto cameras often face greater challenges in low light than their specifications suggest. When photographing distant subjects indoors, at dusk, or after sunset, a camera needs to balance exposure, shutter speed, and noise reduction carefully.
A larger sensor could help the X500 Ultra capture cleaner images with more usable detail. It may also give the image-processing system more information to work with, although the final results will depend on the lens, aperture, stabilization, and software tuning.
Why vivo Has Kept Its Telephoto Sensor Size Consistent
The rumored upgrade becomes more significant when viewed against vivo’s recent camera history.
The X100 Ultra and X200 Ultra used 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP9 telephoto sensors, while the X300 Ultra moved to the newer ISOCELL HP0. Despite that generational change, the sensor format remained at 1/1.4 inch.
Moving to a 1/1.12-inch sensor would represent a substantial change in the hardware approach. The larger format offers roughly 56% more sensor area than a 1/1.4-inch sensor, assuming the stated formats and dimensions are comparable.
That additional area does not automatically guarantee a 56% improvement in photographs. Real-world image quality depends on several factors working together. Nevertheless, it creates more potential for improved light capture and stronger telephoto performance.
For users who frequently photograph concerts, wildlife, architecture, sporting events, or distant landscapes, even incremental improvements at longer focal lengths can make a meaningful difference.
Could vivo Be Rethinking Its Zoom Strategy?
The X500 Ultra’s camera development has attracted attention for another reason: vivo has reportedly been exploring different approaches to long-range zoom.
Earlier leaks suggested that the company was considering three 200MP telephoto sensor sizes: 1/1.12 inch, 1/1.3 inch, and 1/1.4 inch. Those options would offer different balances between image quality and the physical demands of a large camera module.
A bigger sensor can improve light gathering, but it also requires additional space inside the phone. That can complicate the design of the periscope camera, affect the camera bump, and make it harder to balance thickness, weight, and other internal components.
There have also been reports that vivo may reconsider a dedicated 10x telephoto camera in favor of a 200MP periscope system with in-sensor zoom technology. This approach could allow the company to deliver flexible zoom levels without necessarily adding another large camera module.
The latest leak does not confirm that every part of this strategy has been finalized. It does, however, suggest that vivo is still working to find the right combination of sensor size, zoom capability, and practical hardware design.
What Else Could the vivo X500 Ultra Offer?
The telephoto camera is not the only rumored highlight. Previous reports have pointed to a flat 6.85-inch display with 2K resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.
The phone is also expected to use a next-generation flagship chipset, although its final specifications remain unconfirmed. These details suggest vivo is aiming to combine high-end performance with a display and camera system designed for demanding users.
The company has reportedly indicated that the X500 Ultra will launch in China in March or April 2027. That leaves several months for engineering changes, software optimization, and additional leaks before the official announcement.
Pricing and global availability have not been confirmed. Buyers should also wait for official details before making decisions based on rumored camera capabilities.
The Biggest Camera Upgrade May Be the One You Cannot See on Paper
A 200MP camera already sounds impressive, but resolution alone does not determine whether a smartphone takes better photographs. Sensor size, optics, stabilization, processing, and the consistency of results across different lighting conditions are just as important.
That is why the rumored 1/1.12-inch telephoto sensor could be more significant than another increase in megapixel count. If vivo adopts it in the final X500 Ultra, the upgrade could improve one of the most demanding parts of mobile photography: capturing detailed images from a distance.
For now, the larger sensor remains unconfirmed, and vivo could still change the hardware before launch. But if the report proves accurate, the X500 Ultra could become a particularly compelling flagship for users who care about zoom photography and camera versatility.
